East Africa Beckons
Whether it is the Maasai Mara or the Serengeti, the names alone evoke images of a golden savannah stretching as far as the eye can see. Sparsely dotted with acacia trees, the landscape feels infinite as it merges with the horizon. In the distance, you might spot a safari vehicle or a group of Maasai men in vibrant red garments, gathered outside their fenced dwellings. Imagine the rising or setting sun casting a glow over the trees, adding a touch of glamour to this breathtaking golden landscape—the perfect feather in the cap of any journey.
This is what I had come to know of Africa over the years—its landscapes, its people, its culture, and its rich wildlife heritage. Even as a child, I knew this was something special, a land to be cherished and nurtured. Yet, despite knowing what lay ahead, a real-life visit to these famous reserves was a revelation. I landed in a world where the law of the jungle truly ruled. In this fenceless ecosystem, life was a constant battle for survival between predator and prey. Sadly, this 'jungle raj' seemed to mirror the socio-economic landscape of the region as well. It was an eye-opener in every sense. This journey taught us profound life lessons, and we returned truly humbled by the experience.
Safaris hold a unique place in my heart. The thrill of watching a wild animal in its natural habitat is like stepping gingerly into an altogether different world—to be a silent spectator of their daily lives. These animals patiently allow us lesser mortals to follow them, granting a rare peek into their beautiful, raw reality. The charm of spotting wildlife is, quite simply, indescribable. You feel a rush of raw emotion, a deep need to connect, and the adventure seeker within stands ready with a camera, eager to capture these precious, fleeting moments.
Our African Safari Itinerary
Let's begin with the planning and itinerary for our unforgettable 8-day Maasai Mara–Serengeti–Ngorongoro experience. This circuit is perfectly structured to cover the very best of what the region has to offer.
We booked our trip through 7 Wonders Safaris, a tour operator based in Tanzania, who instructed us to arrange the necessary vaccinations and visas. A little more information from them on the day-to-day itinerary and expectations would have been helpful but then this is why exactly I am blogging here for all of you :)
Travel Tips:
Yellow Fever Vaccination: A certificate is mandatory for entry into Tanzania if you are arriving from a yellow fever-endemic country like Kenya. Be sure to check the latest requirements before your trip, as regulations can change.
Malaria Prevention: We were advised to take anti-malarial pills before embarking on our journey. However, I found it to be redundant. As a pharmacist, I strongly oppose taking unnecessary medication. There were hardly any mosquitoes during our stay there in July.
Our 10-day Itinerary looked like this:
Day 1 - July 19- Arrive in Nairobi.
Day 2 - July 20- Spend a day in Nairobi
Day 3- July 21- Nairobi to Maasai Mara
Day 4 & 5 - Juy 22 & 23- Full day safaris at Maasai Mara
Day 6 - July 24- Maasai Mara to Northern Serengeti National Park
Day 7 & 8 - July 25 & 26 - Full day safaris at Northern Serengeti National Park
Day 9 - July 27 - Northern Serengeti to Ngorongoro crater
Day 10 - July 28 - Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha (flight to Nairobi and then back home)
The safaris will begin soon. Stay tuned here for my articles on these exhilarating experiences …
